Joined at the Head
by Catherine Butterfield

7 - 12 March

Drama directed by Ian Macdonald

Set in Boston Massachussets (understated New England accents), Joined at the Head is the tale of the relationship between three high school contemporaries some twenty years on. Jim, now a high school English teacher, is married to the terminally ill Maggy. He bumps into Maggie, an old flame and now best selling novelist on a promotional tour. Jim’s invitation to visit results in an unlikely but immediate friendship between Maggie the writer, intensely self-examining and analytical, and Maggy Jim’s wife, warm and giving despite her illness. In acting as the play’s narrator, Maggie examines both her own career and her new friendship with Jim’s wife. Maggie and Jim begin to confront their own ambitions.

This riveting and fascinating portrait of three different personalities each facing unique challenges and dilemmas, is at once both moving and amusing.
