Caleb Cluff, a retired CID officer, is living in retirement. He is drawn into a murder investigation when the body of a farmer is found. Cluff was friends with the family and very friendly with the widow Nell Norton. Nell’s daughter believes that Cluff is in fact her real father. Then Nell’s nephew is found dead in the canal.
